Paterson resign, re-elected what now in latest scandal?
It looks as though the chickens are coming home to roost on this latest scandal unfolding after Governor David Paterson placed one of his the top aides David Johnson on a suspended leave of absence without pay pending an investigation for allegedly assaulting a woman he lived with. Paterson asked Andrew Cuomo to investigate the case, adding an interesting twist to the story as he is a candidate for governor.
Last October 2009, the alleged victim described an incident to the police called to the scene of the Bronx apartment she lived in with her 13-year-old son according to a NYTimes article, …” …Mr. Johnson, who is 6-foot-7, had choked her, stripped her of much of her clothing, smashed her against a mirrored dresser and taken two telephones from her to prevent her from calling for help, according to police records.”
What makes the case a dramatic one is the possible involvement of Governor Paterson and the New York State Police in what appears to be a domestic violence case. Paterson allegedly telephoned the victim who may have later dropped the charges or discouraged to pursue charges. Mean while this was happening as Paterson embarked on a crusade to bring awareness to the issue of domestic violence signing off on legislation.
While in a February 13th , NY daily News article, the week Hiram Monserrate expelled from the NYS Senate Paterson said he had gotten “off easy with only a misdemeanor assault and expulsion.” And the governor added, “This seemed like a classic case of a woman who was intimidated, who didn’t really understand what her independence could be and was victimized,” Paterson charged.
If one fast tracks forward it almost sounds as though the governor had intimidated the victim of his top aide David Johnson after the assault to keep her from appearing at a hearing because she failed to show up for one on February 8, the hearing and case dismissed after her chat with the Governor on his private cell phone.
This is an except from the transcript of the victim of– David Johnson top aide to Governor Paterson recently placed on leave of absence without pay– during a hearing November 9, 2009 in Bronx Family Court .
“I’m just … . I’m glad you’re doing this, because I thought it was going to be swept under the table because he, he’s like a government official, and I have problems with even calling the police because the state troopers kept calling and harassing me to drop the charges, and I wouldn’t. So I’m, I’m just —”
