School board elections results close race

May 5, 2010

Less than 6,300 votes cast yesterday in the School Board election. The North District, Dr. Patricia E. Devis, overcoming Lawrence Scott but not enough for Jason McCarthy, the so-called banker turned bartender manager at Hutch’s Restaurant, a no-show with Philip Lomax,  from the West District at all the candidates panels, forums and discussions.

Hopefully, he’ll do better at attending Board meetings than the forums, missing all of them from Stonewall Democrats, Forest Civic Association, Citizen Alliance for Quality Education, and the Buffalo Metro-Alliance of Black Educators, with Buffalo News journalist Rod Watson, questioning the panelist.

Dr. Theresa Harris-Tigg, English Professor at Buffalo State College performed excellent for a newcomer , though incumbent Vivian O. Evans returns  to the East District seat that  may change when the  absentee  ballots counted.

Central District candidate McIntyre did considerably well, lacking key endorsements, returning Mary Ruth Kapsiak , incumbent after allegedly she gave him the nod to go ahead sources in the community have said.

The Ferry District, Pamela Cahill, incumbent, coming back, but the race too close. Absentee ballots in the East, Ferry and West still possible to overcome the incumbents.

Carmen Sandiego never found Philip Lomax but escaped from the basement in the charter school as he appears lost the  West District race  to incumbent Ralph Hernandez unless an absentee ballot or two turn up somewhere. She’ll stay on the case. She thanks the Insurgent Teacher Blog for  reporting her status to the public.

The turn-out the lowest  the media should do a better job of coverage, particularly videos of the panels and forums. Artvoice,  the Insurgent Teacher, the Buffalo Puerto Rican Press provided the most alternative reporting with Buffalorising an honorable mention. The Buffalo News provided good mainstream coverage, but absent from the candidates forums in the community.

The races were very close sometimes too close to call as there are still absentee ballots but the largest gap occurred in the North District, the most highly contested and financed.

The politicos were just out on a night through town, flexing their muscles, preparing for the fall when the real boxing matches begin. Still,  it wasn’t  easy  for Education Reform Now Advocacy (ERNA), spending $50,000 in the campaign.

If  Catherine Nugent-Panepinto chose Dr. Devis as her successor  instead of Scott Lawrence as she herself called his candidacy at a Board meeting to the chagrin of members, she would have overcome McCarthy three-fold, but he had  a campaign fund of $10,000 and helped from the $50,000 ERNA spent and used it effectively.

Also,  campaign literature similar to what ERNA mailed out to registered voters would have helped Dr. Devis.  Some residents in the North District said they didn’t get any political literature in the mail from her camp similar to what the incumbents had mailed from the ERNA group.

And Casimiro Rodriguez, on the Devis campaign on Saturday afternoon attempted through Niagara Council Member David Rivera who earlier endorsed Scott to ask if  he  would bow out but it did not happen.

Certainly,  it leaves the political door for a Latino to emerge in a Council or Assembly seat, so all was not a lost cause except for the children, but it was  not the worst scenario expected.
