Carlos Slim Helú, still the richest latino in the universe

May 12, 2010

Carlos Slim Helú, born on January 28, 1940 in Mexico City

Carlos Slim Helú is the richest Latino on the planet. He is a Mexican from a Lebanese family that settled in Mexico in the first decade of the 20th century when his father Julián Slim Haddad escaping conscription from the Ottoman Empire  army emigrated from Lebanon to Mexico at age 14 where his four older brothers settled earlier in 1898.

Don Julián was an astute man defending  the  rights of Lebanese community in 1927 when the Mexican government initiated restrictive immigration policies. Subsequently, he submits a legal brief to the Mexican government that eventually lifted these restrictions against Lebanese immigration, later involving themselves in the Nationalist Campaign of the 1930s, promoting the motto, “consume what the country produces.”
