Elena Kagan confirmed justice supreme court
Elena Kagan confirmed Thursday to the Supreme Court. She is the 112th justice and just the fourth woman ever to sit on the high court. Kagan is okay certainly qualified but her nomination and confirmation did not seem to be as contentious as Sonia Sotomayor. Simply, people of color have to undergo more stringent requirements for positions of this caliber while whites get by with less. Moreover, Kagan joins a court where she is the eighth Jewish justice to be appointed and confirmed and to join two others. Sadly, the only woman of color to ever sit on the Supreme court is Sotomayor. President Barack Obama missed the mark on this one and should have appointed an African-American or Asian female that would have added more balance to the court.
Back in April,Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) commented, that ““We’re not sure this president is ever going to nominate another African- American to the court,” and three months later he did not. The problem is “…many legal scholars and journalists–although not the Black Press Corps– have begun to question her t commitment to racial diversity–or lack thereof.” Some written Kagan is a bad choice while the White house defended her diversity record. And the Kagan appointment is a topic blacks will continue to question in the future.
