Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus Uncertainty about Cuomo Agenda

January 19, 2011

The state Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, Chairperson Sen. Ruth Hassell-Thompson issued their reaction to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State address giving him high marks but saying that, “more needs to be done for Communities of Color.

There is uncertainty among the group on how Cuomo is implementing his proposed property tax relief plan and new incentive based approach to programs in both education and health care. So ” with a $10 billion budget deficit they want Gov. Cuomo to ensure that the burden of closing the budget gap is not falling saliently on the shoulders of indigent and communities of color.”

The Governor it seems is taking his cue from the Federal government U.S. Department of Education in his similar approach to educational funding imposing a competitive incentive for programs.

With enormous amounts of money the hedge fund investors contributed to his campaign chest, Cuomo appears to be responding to their interests and more changes to come as this group exerts its special interests on the Governor’s education agenda.

I would agree that, as for so long now, there should be more funding for the minority communities in Puerto Rico. It seems this is the only way that in the long term the state (should I say country?) will become the great place it can be.
